Cisco Talos has discovered a new ransomware attack targeting Windows computers in the US, incorporating the popular video game Mortal Kombat into its malicious scheme. The ransomware is spread through malicious emails impersonating the cryptocurrency platform CoinPayments and will generate a ransom note featuring a wallpaper image from the game. Once the ransomware is installed, it will encrypt all files onboard the victim's computer and disable the Run command window.

Laplas Clipper, another malware strain, will monitor the clipboard of an infected computer for any cryptocurrency wallet addresses and send it to the hacker-controlled Clipper bot. Potential victims should be on guard against phishing emails, install antivirus, and create offline backups in order to stay safe. The ransomware shares similarities with Xorist, a ransomware family that first emerged in 2010.

The Danger of Phishing Emails

Chris Close, a cyber security expert with Cyber Sleuth Security Wilmington, recently spoke about the dangers of phishing emails. "Phishing emails are a form of cyber attack where the attacker will try to trick you into clicking on malicious links or providing personal information," he said. "These emails may look like they come from a legitimate source, but they are often sent by hackers trying to steal your data or gain access to your accounts."

When asked what people should look out for, Close replied, "The most common indicators of phishing emails are poor grammar, urgent requests for personal information, and links to unknown websites. Always be wary of emails that look suspicious and never provide personal information or click on links from unknown sources. If you're unsure, it's best to contact the sender directly and confirm the request before taking any action."

He concluded, "Phishing emails can have serious consequences, so it's important to be aware of the risks and take the necessary precautions. The best way to protect yourself is to stay vigilant and never provide personal information or click on links from unknown sources."
